Oligarchy Update - New Enigma Force Trophies
Thinking about RPGs, I really do love the whole idea of these Tyrants. It's probably the combination of game mechanics and narrative implementation- mechanically, Apocalypse Frame is a rather "low-numbers-math" game. You rarely need to calculate double digits, and barely anything above 20 except for Drops. What Tyrants bring to the table isn't bigger numbers, it's mechanical shenanigans that complicate things and upend your plans- you're not making numbers larger, you're doing something more novel and implementing a new law of the universe. Narratively, Tyrants are both well-established with their mannerisms and backstory and yet open-ended enough to be full of potential. One of your players suddenly starts grousing about this snooty Republic pilot with a massive ego? Suggest to them this guy came from a rich family, and oh hey it's Praetorian! Suddenly what was just going to be a nifty gimmick boss is now someone who hates an ace's guts and is hated in return, and you've got the recipe for a good show.
I made an update with four new Tyrants towards the end of 2023....and promptly forgot that the devlog was in draft mode. Woops- so I'll roll those updates into this one:
- Four new Tyrants- two Claw, and two "Survivalists"
- New/tweaked Trophies for most of Enigma Force
- A couple of other tweaks here and there
For future plans, while my energy is directed elsewhere, I do have a couple things I'd like to do if the ideas ever came to mind:
- "Panoply"; remember what I was talking about how Tyrants got sweet gimmicks? Well, what if each type of basic enemy could also get a gimmick as a crisis advance?
- Fill out the Infection Cult's Roster- one of the first Tyrants I came up with was Jubilant, the weirdo who fell into space stuff and now is a blithering lunatic. I want to continue the theme of "Space Weirdness" and while the (previous) update gives him a relatively more lucid lieutenant with one of my favorite Trophies, I'd like to get that number up to a nice square four to match the Republic's starting roster of Tyrants. While I've had some ideas, one of the more fleshed-out Trophies went to Runner (a massive improvement IMO), I've got a couple of half-formed ideas floating around. I'll leave one for the reader here:
-----
Trophy: MX-PHYLACTERY
A recovered Frame with impressive regenerative capabilities. Inside the cockpit are a number of scratches; examination reveals these to be mostly vertical marks of similar length.
Resources:
Vigor: 5+Drive
Tension: 4+Speed
Fuel: 4+Control
Signature Feature: Rejuvenation. When you have at least one point of Frame Damage, you may use Rejuvenation (even if you have just taken a third point of Frame Damage) to perform the following effects:
- Enter Last Stand and clear all Frame Damage. Neither you nor your Frame are automatically lost after the effects of this Last Stand.
- MX-PHYLACTERY permanently gains a number of stat points to its resources pool equal to Frame Damage cleared minus 1.
- Your pilot permanently loses a number of stat points equal to the amount of Frame Damage Cleared. If this drops your stat pool below 0, then at the end of Last Stand your pilot is unrecoverable- no exceptions.
